Uncompahgre Peak

Thanks to the generosity of a group I met on Wetterhorn Peak the day before, I was able to get a ride to the upper Nellie Creek trailhead for Uncompahgre Peak and skip the extra four miles of hiking from the lower trailhead. As it was on the climb of Wetterhorn Peak, the lower approach was a very nice hike on a good trail.

As the trail reached the west ridge, photo occasional gaps allowed a view to the west and of Wetterhorn Peak were I was yesterday. photo The trail followed the ridge up to the crest where the trail ends. From here I had to find a way up 150 feet of steep and loose rock to reach the upper slopes. The trail then resumes up to the mostly flat summit. Stay away from the edge—there is nothing below you but air!

The summit had a little bit of wind, but not quite enough for flying my kite. photo Several members of the group also tried to see if they could get the kite to fly, but without success.
